Studio 9 Launch
2:31
well here we are at last in brand new Studio 9. I wonder a few people
2:38
sitting in our studio audience realize that at this moment you are sitting in between
2:45
150 000 bricks 35
2:50
000 tons of concrete three thousand tons of steel girders
2:56
and two Builders who didn’t get out of the way in time
3:02
you’ll like it in here especially I know we will like it but our studio audience will like it particularly because our
3:08
air conditioning in this studio is quite unique our chief engineer Rod Biddle is
3:15
responsible for the efficiency of our new air conditioning system he comes down every 20 minutes and blows
3:21
Through the Keyhole and it’s working tremendously well another good feature of this studio is that we can
3:28
fly scenery now this means that with a series of ropes we can drop in
3:34
or take out scenery at a fantastic rate it’s as quick and it all disappears up
3:40
into the roof of course you’ve got to let go which reminds me
3:45
terrible thing happened yesterday we’ve got the only prop boy in the world that knows what a television Studio looks
3:50
like from 2000 feet up in the air he didn’t let go and he went right up everyone here at Channel 90. everyone
3:58
here at Channel 9 is not laughing and uh no we are all excited about the whole
4:03
thing even the girls in the canteen are excited they’ve been excited all day
4:08
they’ve been nervous well I’ll say they were nervous have you ever had a sardine malted
4:17
anyway the show has started and I know I’m expressing the views of our board of directors when I say
4:23
it better be good [Music] it better be good it better be good and funny

7:42
when television movie makers I mean when television commenced Movie Makers fought back by introducing
7:50
larger screens in the picture theaters but now with this modern equipment here in Studio 9 we intend in turn to drag
7:56
people out of the movie theaters by introducing television’s equivalent of cinemascope however we found just as the
8:03
people who invented cinemascope must have found that there are a few problems associated with this process you’ll see
8:10
what I mean in this demonstration of ninoscope [Music]
I Love You
8:30
I can’t possibly live without you I I love you
8:45
what
8:54
I said I love you my darling and I cannot possibly live without you
9:08
I can’t hear you
9:19
I said I love you and I want to marry you and I can’t live without you
9:35
it’s no good I just can’t hear you
9:45
I said I love I said I’ll hang on I’ll come over
9:52
I said I love you [Music] [Applause]
9:59
[Music] well new studio or not we still have
Heinz Mystery Cupboard
10:06
some commercials for you and I see it’s time for the Heinz mystery cabin but in
10:12
this brand new set with stairs and poles and new furniture I don’t know where the Hinds mystery
10:18
oh it’s up there it’s on the first floor
10:23
Heinz mystery cabin
10:29
oh look at that the Heinz Mr King
10:37
oh the Heinz people didn’t forget me they remembered because the very first night
10:44
of IMT was on May the 7th 1957. yes it was and this
10:52
was probably the well it was the second commercial I did for the Heinz company the first commercial
10:57
was in a program called Susie one Easter and I was a
11:06
I was an Easter Bunny and that’s a picture from that that was that was a few months before even IMT
11:11
started I think I was more attractive as a bunny than I was as a human
11:17
however it’s very good so the Heinz people I’m happy to say have remembered and although the show has changed I’ve
11:23
changed everybody’s changed Heinz quality hasn’t changed and you can
11:29
still get the Luscious the same luscious flavor and quality in every can of Heinz
11:34
soups now there’s all kinds to choose from including mushroom chicken vegetable broths all kind 22 and all I
11:42
could go on and name them all but that would be a bit silly because we don’t have that much time just remember that
11:48
Heinz our flavors the more Heinz is the best whether you choose vegetable soup
11:54
mushroom soup any of them you’ll enjoy Heinz soups
12:00
now I think we’re to meet uh Jeff Cook but I don’t know where he is let’s try and find Corky oh Jeff you’re
12:08
up there
Down the Pole
12:19
that’s that’s a pole for sliding down if I’m up here Jeff and I have to get down quick do you want to see me
12:25
I’m what you see you do this yeah you assure you know what you’re doing well see I’m up here and if I want to get
12:31
down quickly I slide down the pole do you want to see me I’d like to see it no I’ll show you
12:38
but you’re hey you’re up there already you could have gone up that other way yeah well you can’t get to the pole from that angles
12:46
you sure you know what you’re doing that I might do that tomorrow night I think I don’t know down the pole
12:55
yes save as a church how many churches have you slid down
13:01
not many this weekend oh there’s a bit of I love it
13:12
there’s a bit of an Olympic gymnast in you oh yes I think it was good the way now would you go up again
TV Week
13:22
up the pole so here Charlie if you think tell us about TV week Jeff can I I wish
13:28
you would may I may I tell you about TV week this week’s TV week with an exciting
13:34
photo a very colorful photo on the very front of it of the folk from Ponderosa and they also tell you about a very
13:40
exciting new competition wrapped around Bonanza you’ll be able to read it all about that in TV week it gives you a
13:45
chance of a trip to Hollywood as well as that of course you’ve got TV week’s usual up to the date news flashes the
13:51
most interesting story here by Jack eiling about Graham Kennedy who wants a
13:56
better joint or something grime’s going to open a restaurant yes uh very very soon
14:03
it says that all that here in TV week you can read about that then there’s uh stories about all the latest shows on TV
14:09
at this time of the year and there are many many of them too there’s this week with Jack Haley in which you get into a
14:14
bit of Scandal and gossip and all that sort of thing with Jack’s very fertile brain
14:21
uh then there’s smart alec that’s Alec Martin uh who’s a singer as well as
14:26
being a columnist he’s there and as well as that they probably have one of the most comprehensive
14:32
television guides that you could possibly wish to find anywhere at all all in all TV week is Great Value it
14:37
always has been it’s been with us for so many years now it’s sort of part of the Victorian scene isn’t it part of the television scene in Victoria TV week ask
14:43
for it’s only one shilling it’s out today TV week this is the story that makes this is the paper that makes TV
14:49
stories makes TV history TV week ask for it order your copy you’ll be glad you did thank you Jeff on this very special
14:56
occasion the first night from our studio nine it’s with a great deal of pleasure that
15:04
I introduce and welcome back to IMT someone who’s been associated with the
15:09
program and he sort of grew up in the program which is back here now after much traveling and much experience

17:22
nice to be that Graham we’ve said this before yes we have I’m always coming and going Hello Dolly uh here’s a number
17:29
that’s uh it’s probably the biggest hits since Stardust I heard a disc jockey say
17:34
everyone is singing It in America as well as here but everybody I use it for the opening and the closing of my act
17:39
and everybody you see although in the show it’s completely different to this yes it’s very slow in all time but it’s
17:45
great even even uh uh president Johnston Johnson had it used for his hello Lyndon
17:52
hello the story is the goal um Goldwater Road and said that he wanted to use it and um
17:59
well he wrote back and said no you can’t because uh Johnson’s using it uh so he would be uh for Johnson you think I I
18:05
think so listen tell us about your husband oh well he’s um where is he he’s uh I wanted to meet him I want to see
18:11
him now where is he it’s today Monday uh Monday so it’s Sunday he’s on
18:17
his way to uh Hollywood because they’re doing the Steve Allen Show that was now it’s changed but they’re going to do
18:23
that and I think he’s probably out in the golf course missing me very much
18:29
we were at the airport and he was very sad saying goodbye and as the last thought he said Gee did we pass a golf
18:35
range on the way to the airport and I suggested oh well bye-bye yes yes very emotional real upset
18:44
well anyway Elaine um it’s beaut to have you on the show again you’re going to stay here this time or is that the wrong
18:50
question oh well I’m going to stay for a few months so I can stay with my mother till about Christmas and if Tim can come
18:57

19:02
happen I hope Tim comes over here because I like a game of golf too really I’ll play golf with Tim really you’re

Burton Newton
42:00
I think between us we’ve both been responsible for the best kept secret
42:06
in television not until you just came out of that little place did I don’t think any of the crew knew no well I
42:13
know that Rosie and Jeff almost collapsed when they saw me come in I’ve been here approximately 10 minutes and
42:20
it’s been quite exciting because I’ve never been treated you know sort of as a security thing before and it was funny I
42:27
had a black coat on and dark glasses and the security man said hello
42:34
which is marvelous well we’ve had we’ve had these snide meetings uh in fact last
42:40
night it was very kind of you but to have me at your place and I want to take this opportunity of thanking you very
42:45
much for looking and if Mrs Newton if you’re watching thank you very much my love for a very lovely dinner it was very it was very kind as well as a
42:51
matter of fact mum was very excited when she knew you were coming because it’s a brand new home for us and so forth and I
42:57
was very pleased about the The Secret of coming here tonight and I thought it was a good idea for you and I to get together but having dinner dinner was
43:04
nice did you like it thank you Mrs Newton for the dinner it must be oh well mum went to some trouble see because
43:10
listen do you often do you often have baked beans uh
43:17
no I’m kidding it it wasn’t the team it wasn’t it wasn’t the tin of baked beans
43:22
at all what was it what was it a tin of spaghetti spaghetti but we enjoyed
43:27
having out there gray because it really was tremendous and you’re just saying baked beans and things remember the old
43:33
days uh they’re not in this studio certainly and this is the very first time I’ve seen it and it is wonderful
43:38
and in the old days we used to gag around a bit that was fun I used to have
43:44
fun at you about your little pot belly remember that and I used to say a funny little suitsy
43:50
yeah
43:57
you know late nights and everything do you remember do you remember when I
44:02
used to call your oyster eyes which you know the funny thing is you
44:10
have got oyster eyes just to watch it it’s not very nice
44:17
today I mean after all I do have a few words to say if you don’t mind because I haven’t even said good evening
44:25
my name is Bert Newton Dale and it’s very nice to be back here at
44:33
the place where I first found what did I find oh
44:38
well I could go through yeah when I first found a lot of happiness in television a lot of Happiness all
44:44
getting aside it is tremendous over the last couple of weeks there have been many mentions of where I might go
44:50
um
44:56
that have been rumors about Channel low channel 7. channel two even but these are
45:03
completely untrue and the money that I’m being paid for this guest appearance tonight I’m very happy about
45:10
channel of course they came up with a very very big offer but I
45:17
how long are you going to be there because it’s getting very I’m standing here and well just I’ve got a few words
45:22
you’ve been away a while haven’t you I haven’t did as a matter of fact I’ve been away how long since I have been
45:29
waiting for this for nine months well
45:35
that’s an interesting uh number of months isn’t it I don’t get uh
45:42
eczema in that time foreign actually the the management here have
45:48
asked me to do something tonight about which you don’t know uh you know that one of my abilities if I’ve got any at
45:56
all is to stop people on the street oh that’s right and talk to you and talk to them and my job tonight is to stop men
46:03
